Narrative Writing Goals

These are the goals for student writing in grades 3-5. As we mature as writers through the grades, our writing becomes more complex and reflects our deepening understandings about ourselves and our world.

If you are in 3rd grade, your narrative writing should show the following:

Where you are at/ setting

What you are doing/ did/ will do there - describe the action

Details that help move along the action - transitions

Details that show why this is something you remember well - we remember things because of how they make us feel

If you are in 4th grade, your writing should show all of the 3rd grade characteristics PLUS the following:

What you saw there - objects/ characters/ action

What you thought as things happened

Details about your memory

Details that help the reader see/ visualize

What you saw/ heard/ smelled/ tasted/ touched and how it made you feel

If you are in 5th grade, your writing should show all of the 3rd and 4th grade characteristics AS WELL AS:

Detailed description of the setting/ place

Detailed descriptions of the characters

Show through word choice and language who is telling the story (one of the characters or an outside narrator)

Description of the problem/ conflict that makes this an interesting story

Description of how the problem is solved

Details that show the action and events
